What is Mentoring

What is a Mentor?

A mentor is a trusted adult friend with a long-term, consistent commitment to provide guidance and support to a youth.  The Crawford County Mentoring Program is focused on supporting the relationship between the mentor and youth (mentee) and developing the character and capabilities of the young person.

Mentor Position Description

The volunteer mentor will work closely with the school-based site coordinator (usually the guidance counselor) to build a caring, supportive relationship with the mentee.  Mentoring matches are encouraged to view the development of a trusting, mutually satisfying relationship as the primary goal of their time spent together.  The mentor does not replace the parent or guardian, but rather supplements the work of parents, teachers, counselors, and other social services and educational professionals. Ultimately, the goal of the mentor is to help the mentee develop self-esteem and life skills necessary to become a happy and productive member of society.
